The Six Dots on Sasuke's Rinnegan, Explained

In Naruto, the Rinnegan is one of the most potent Kekkai Genkai that only a few characters have mastered. Sasuke, of course, is one of them. However, fans immediately noticed something unique about Sasuke’s Rinnegan. Unlike others with the ability, such as Madara, Sasuke has six dots in the eye that holds the Rinnegan. The six dots, called tomoe, are more than just an eye-catching design choice — they also have a practical purpose concerning the Rinnegan’s power.

Otherwise called the Shrinnegan or Tomoed Rinnegan, it represents a state of heightened power. In Naruto Gaiden, it was revealed that the tomoe can be seen when someone has reached their full power. If Sasuke were to overuse his Rinnegan, the tomoe would disappear until he regenerated his power. They essentially indicate when he’s at his full capacity and gradually fade away the more he overworks his power. Of course, fans have also developed plenty of theories about potential other reasons for the appearance of Sasuke’s Rinnegan.

The design of Sasuke’s Rinnegan isn’t the only thing that sets it apart from others. As fans know, the only way someone can unlock the Rinnegan is by getting Hagoromo Otsutsuki’s chakra. Hagoromo may either give it to that person himself or combine it with Indra and Ashura’s chakra. During Sasuke’s battle against Madara, he unlocked the Rinnegan after meeting Hagoromo’s conditions. While others went about obtaining the Rinnegan in the other two ways, Sasuke was a unique case because it showcased how his Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan evolved.

Due to the nature of how Sasuke acquired it, some fans theorize that his Rinnegan looks so unique compared to others because he can control both his Eternal Magnekyou Sharingan and the Rinnegan in the same eye. The Rinnegan also symbolizes yet another dichotomy between Sasuke and Naruto. Naruto can use the Six Paths Sage Mode, while the Rinnegan is notoriously referred to as the Eye of Six Paths, which aligns with Sasuke’s six tomoe.

What Makes Sasuke’s Rinnegan So Overpowered?

The Rinnegan is literally the eye of a god, so everyone who uses it is blessed with immense power. However, Sasuke’s is especially overpowered. Each Rinnegan user has six basic powers via the Six Paths. The Naraka Path grants access to the King of Hell, the Deva Path allows users to manipulate repulsiveness and attractiveness, the Animal Path summons animals and the Asura Path manifests weapons from the user’s body. The Preta Path absorbs chakra and ninjutsu techniques, while the Human Path steals other people’s souls.

It’s already overpowered, but Sasuke takes it to a brand-new level. There’s also a Seventh Path that only a few Rinnegan users have the potential to unlock. The Outer Path allows Sasuke to revive someone. Due to his six tomoe, Sasuke can also utilize the Amenotekikara, allowing him to switch the places of objects or people. Eventually, he got so good with this ability that he could swap places with objects or other people.
